My school, Pacific Union College, is America’s Most Beautiful College according to Newsweek‘s newest ranking. At least that’s what the video preview The Daily Beast just posted on its website that has overwhelmed my facebook and twitter timelines says. In all honesty, being ranked most beautiful is not a very big surprise at all—in terms of accuracy. Surprisingly, I have found many of the posts rather amusing, while others constitute a very clear reminder of the issues with the so-called education at ultra-conservative schools like Southern. For those unfamiliar with the ongoing saga at La Sierra University, the school is being attacked by a fundamentalist witch hunt led by Shane Hilde and Sean Pitman who want the school to lose accreditation and stop teaching the science of evolution in favor of their narrow beliefs. They have set up a website, “Educate Truth,” to try and force the University to only teach what subscribes to their narrow views.
